TECHNICAL SCIENCE COORDINATOR
Sea Education Association is seeking a new Technical Science Coordinator to begin working early summer 2013. This is a full-time, Woods Hole, MA based position and includes benefits.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
Works under the supervision and guidance of the Academic Dean to coordinate and manage specific areas of responsibility within and for Academic Programs and the vessel laboratories. Also may assist with day to day support of marine operations for safe and successful operation of SEA’s two vessels
These areas of responsibility include the management of safety with regards to vessel laboratory, wire, and deployment operations; maintaining, troubleshooting, and providing training and documentation/recordkeeping on a variety of oceanographic instruments and scientific equipment; selecting and purchasing consumables and scientific equipment for use at sea and on shore; and coordinating program activities between Academic Programs and Ship Operations. In support of these tasks, the Technical Science Coordinator will be expected to travel to the ships during their annual maintenance periods. The Technical Science Coordinator will also support the Administrative Science Coordinator whose responsibilities include hiring and scheduling shipboard scientific crew and working with the State Department to ensure compliance with foreign research clearance requests. In addition, the Technical Science Coordinator works closely with the Associate Dean of Institutional Relations and Research to manage data and archive collections generated by SEA.
As assigned by the Dean, the Technical Science Coordinator may also carry out other support responsibilities. These responsibilities could include specific tasks related to program development, program and teaching preparations, teaching and program participation, and possible time on the ship during at-sea programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
- MS/MA in a science or engineering field, or equivalent technical experience/training.
- Minimum 1 year of experience with seagoing research or field-based education programs, familiarity with research vessels helpful.
- Knowledge of operation, maintenance, support and troubleshooting of common oceanographic equipment and software required.
- Proficiency with Windows computer systems, networks and instrument networks, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and database software required.
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work and communicate well with diverse groups (i.e., research scientists, vessel operations staff).
- Flexibility, ability to multitask and readiness to assist vessels as needed.
- Budget development and expenditure monitoring experience helpful.
- Shipboard participation requires physical ability and agility to quickly move and to react to events on deck, to access below decks, to climb aloft, and to live and work in confined spaces. Also, life at sea demands the physical, psychological and emotional ability to adapt to a ship's watch schedule, and to withstand extended periods of time on a moving vessel without daily access to shore resources.

The Keystone Initiatives are a centerpiece of the Foundation's strategic plan and drive our work on some of the most important conservation issues in North America. The goal of the Keystone Initiatives is to create and implement a core portfolio of select, issue-specific programs that will achieve long-term impact with measurable outcomes. Keystone Directors work with program staff and evaluation scientists to create and implement programs that have the potential to influence conservation well beyond the Foundation's own resources. The Keystone Director is expected to be a thought-leader in his/her field and strengthen the Foundation's position as a leader in the conservation community. Keystone Directors are also expected to play a leadership role in securing federal and private funding for their programs.
For the Freshwater Fish Director, the Foundation seeks an individual with an entrepreneurial spirit and a broad knowledge of the challenges facing freshwater ecosystems, large-scale and trans-boundary conservation issues. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable record as an innovator in his/her field and serve as a catalyst within the Foundation to create new combinations of people, processes, methodologies, and ideas that will expand successes in outcome-based conservation. The Foundation is particularly interested in individuals with expertise in one or more of the following issues: innovative watershed, stream, and river conservation (acquisition and restoration) techniques, ecosystem services, watershed conservation, and/or energy development impacts on fish and riverine habitats. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Science, Conservation, and Strategy Development

Lead the implementation and evaluation of existing Freshwater Fish Keystone Initiatives.

Develop as needed and dictated by Chief Science Officer new programs and concepts for funding and implementation in the general area of freshwater and fish conservation.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Food Systems Coordinator works in concert with Food Systems team members and other CFSA staff to build the food system infrastructure necessary to support and enhance access to local, organic, and sustainable food across the Carolinas. Specific responsibilities include supporting regional food system assessments, identifying and launching priority agriculture and food system projects, and developing a support network for growers, buyers, agripreneurs in the Carolinas.
The Food Systems Coordinator reports to the Operations Director and supervises staff as needed. Potential for advancement within one year, dependent upon performance.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
ADMINSTRATION & OUTREACH (5%):
· Assist financial and programmatic monitoring to ensure compliance, progress towards objectives and expected results, and work plan and budget adherence.
· Increase awareness and visibility of Food Systems programs, including presentations, speaking engagements, and general outreach.
· Identify and pursue opportunities to expand membership and ensure member satisfaction.
FOOD SYSTEM ASSESSMENT (35%):
· Lead CFSA participation in food assessments, including 1) documenting current food system conditions and identifying opportunities and barriers, 2) cataloging available/recommended primary and secondary data sources, 3) providing guidance on analysis and data driven decision-making.
· Collaborate on statewide food system assessments and economic analyses to integrate CFSA food system goals with long-term strategic plans across the Carolinas.
· Work with key partners to develop and maintain landscape analysis of Carolinas’ local, organic food systems including findings from existing assessments and data sources (internal and external), collaborating partners, key food initiatives/resources.
· Convene and collaborate with regional advisory committee/s to guide regional needs assessments and develop recommendations by region.
FOOD PROJECTS & INFRASTRUCTURE INCUBATION (35%)
· Collaborate on state, regional, and/or community action plans and investment strategies to identify priority food projects and possible sources of funding. Projects to include 1) agricultural inputs and production, 2) processing, 3) aggregation and distribution, and 4) market channels.
· Identify and cultivate relationships with agribusiness professionals, funders, and small business advisors to synergize efforts and leverage resources available.
· Collaborate with partners to develop a support network for agripreneurs including: links to technical expertise, best practice/success models, connections to buyers/growers, and funding opportunities.
· Assist and/or manage the piloting/incubation of priority food projects; approximately 2-3 large, regional projects per year.
· Document best practices/case studies of successful business models.
DIRECT ASSISTANCE (25%)
· Provide resources and guidance to local communities (i.e. food policy councils, extension, community development agencies) to conduct food assessments and identify priority food projects.
· Collaborate with external partners (I.e. universities, Cooperative Extension, Dept. of Ag, etc.) to develop and/or disseminate resources on market improvement (access, scale-up/expansion, buyer requirements, market outlets, etc.).
· Build resources on market outlets and market strategies and channel inquiries and requests for marketing assistance to appropriate advisors/service providers.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
· Bachelor's degree plus 3 years' experience or Master's degree plus 1 year experience, or equivalent professional experience in any of the following (or related) fields: whole systems design, community development/capacity-building, public planning, sustainable agriculture, supply chain management, nonprofit management.
· 5+ years experience in project management, specifically project planning/design, implementation, and assessment.
· 3+ years experience working on the nexus of food, agriculture, and sustainable development.
· Knowledgeable of food systems; knowledge of the Carolinas’ food systems preferred
· Strong analytic skills, including ability to identify systemic problems and develop innovative solutions.
