Overview


This position will be working in the Solid Waste Program of the Waste Management and Prevention Division.  Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing a statewide solid waste management plan and the provisions of Act 148. A focus of the work will be on waste reduction, recycling, and organics diversion. Other duties include developing and disseminating outreach materials, providing technical assistance to solid waste districts, municipalities, businesses, schools and others with respect to improving solid waste management in Vermont, and other solid waste issues.


 

General Job Description


Planning, analytical and administrative work at an advanced professional level for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Duties involve complex tasks in the technical review and analysis of environmental policies, programs, activities and data in a variety of regulatory, non-regulatory, scientific, and engineering programs. Work involves considerable independence in completing work assignments and greater responsibility and accountability than lower level analyst work. May provide project or program oversight and/or supervise program staff or provide expertise in a specialized technology or program element which is not duplicated in the Department. Work is performed under the general direction of a higher-level technical or administrative superior.


 

Preferred Qualifications


Preference will be given to those with:
¿ Knowledge of solid waste management, solid waste programs, and solid waste planning.
¿ Knowledge of recycling and organics diversion, including composting.
¿ Experience with developing outreach materials, social media, and education plans.
¿ Experience providing technical assistance to local governments, state agencies, businesses, and schools.
¿ Experience in developing environmental plans and policy and in the implementation of such plans.

TECHNICAL SCIENCE COORDINATOR

Sea Education Association is seeking a new Technical Science Coordinator to begin working early summer 2013. This is a full-time, Woods Hole, MA based position and includes benefits.

 

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

Works under the supervision and guidance of the Academic Dean to coordinate and manage specific areas of responsibility within and for Academic Programs and the vessel laboratories. Also may assist with day to day support of marine operations for safe and successful operation of SEA’s two vessels

 

These areas of responsibility include the management of safety with regards to vessel laboratory, wire, and deployment operations; maintaining, troubleshooting, and providing training and documentation/recordkeeping on a variety of oceanographic instruments and scientific equipment; selecting and purchasing consumables and scientific equipment for use at sea and on shore; and coordinating program activities between Academic Programs and Ship Operations. In support of these tasks, the Technical Science Coordinator will be expected to travel to the ships during their annual maintenance periods. The Technical Science Coordinator will also support the Administrative Science Coordinator whose responsibilities include hiring and scheduling shipboard scientific crew and working with the State Department to ensure compliance with foreign research clearance requests. In addition, the Technical Science Coordinator works closely with the Associate Dean of Institutional Relations and Research to manage data and archive collections generated by SEA.

 

As assigned by the Dean, the Technical Science Coordinator may also carry out other support responsibilities. These responsibilities could include specific tasks related to program development, program and teaching preparations, teaching and program participation, and possible time on the ship during at-sea programs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS/MA in a science or engineering field, or equivalent technical experience/training.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with seagoing research or field-based education programs, familiarity with research vessels helpful.
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, support and troubleshooting of common oceanographic equipment and software required.
  • Proficiency with Windows computer systems, networks and instrument networks, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and database software required.
  • Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with diverse groups (i.e., research scientists, vessel operations staff).
  • Flexibility, ability to multitask and readiness to assist vessels as needed.
  • Budget development and expenditure monitoring experience helpful.
  • Shipboard participation requires physical ability and agility to quickly move and to react to events on deck, to access below decks, to climb aloft, and to live and work in confined spaces. Also, life at sea demands the physical, psychological and emotional ability to adapt to a ship's watch schedule, and to withstand extended periods of time on a moving vessel without daily access to shore resources.

Environmental stewardship, long-term economic development, and responsible use of coastal and ocean resources
are at the heart of the Sea Grant mission. Extension has helped build a strong fishing industry association that works cooperatively with researchers and policy-makers in the Florida Keys. Commercial fisherie in Monroe County are facing continuing challenges with waterfront redevelopment, changes in customer base, limits on fishing activity, and the effects of hurricanes. The programmatic vision for the agent in this position is to improve co-management between regulatory agencies and the commercial fishing industry to improve sustainability of both natural resources and the fishing families and communities of the Florida Keys.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive marine science program in cooperation with county and state extension colleagues and local citizens. The agent will focus efforts especially on educational programming for local fishing organizations, scientists and county, state, and federal regulatory agencies for the purpose of improving the co-management of marine resources by the various stakeholders. This agent will also provide educational information to individuals and businesses concerning marine uses, environmental protection, climate change issues, and resource management. Extension works closely with industry to address all issues impacting their productivity. Extension provides regular educational presentations at industry meetings, assists in community development via the seafood festival, and participates/facilitates both fisheries research and management activities to empower local fishermen to participate in advancing their industry.
The agent is expected to maintain an effective program advisory committee and establish a system for accountability and public information to all relevant individuals, groups, organizations and agencies. Director of Freshwater Fish Conservation

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

 

SUMMARY

The Keystone Initiatives are a centerpiece of the Foundation's strategic plan and drive our work on some of the most important conservation issues in North America. The goal of the Keystone Initiatives is to create and implement a core portfolio of select, issue-specific programs that will achieve long-term impact with measurable outcomes. Keystone Directors work with program staff and evaluation scientists to create and implement programs that have the potential to influence conservation well beyond the Foundation's own resources. The Keystone Director is expected to be a thought-leader in his/her field and strengthen the Foundation's position as a leader in the conservation community. Keystone Directors are also expected to play a leadership role in securing federal and private funding for their programs.

For the Freshwater Fish Director, the Foundation seeks an individual with an entrepreneurial spirit and a broad knowledge of the challenges facing freshwater ecosystems, large-scale and trans-boundary conservation issues. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable record as an innovator in his/her field and serve as a catalyst within the Foundation to create new combinations of people, processes, methodologies, and ideas that will expand successes in outcome-based conservation. The Foundation is particularly interested in individuals with expertise in one or more of the following issues: innovative watershed, stream, and river conservation (acquisition and restoration) techniques, ecosystem services, watershed conservation, and/or energy development impacts on fish and riverine habitats. The Freshwater Fish Director should have a strong scientific background and thorough understanding of the cutting-edge issues in fish and freshwater conservation as well as the ability to raise funding.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Science, Conservation, and Strategy Development

  1. Lead the implementation and evaluation of existing Freshwater Fish Keystone Initiatives.

  2. Develop as needed and dictated by Chief Science Officer new programs and concepts for funding and implementation in the general area of freshwater and fish conservation.

  3. Work with science team to establish conservation goals for general area of expertise and for keystone as part of new strategy development.

  4. Work with science team to develop and/or adapt existing monitoring methodology to existing grant portfolio and investments that also aligns with conservation framework and conservation goals as part of new strategy.

  5. Work with evaluation team to assess performance of one or more initiatives within keystone thematic area.

Partnership Engagement and Outreach

  1. Ensure adequate and timely reports, interactions, and outreach with all relevant Partners, specifically US Government Agencies, Foundations and Board members.

  2. Ensure productive management and smooth running of Board subcommittee for keystone. This includes interactions with Board members and chair in the preparation of all material and reports as well as during Board meetings, and any other engagements as needed.

  3. Act as spokesperson for NFWF on matters related to Keystone and initiatives and represent the Foundation at key relevant meetings and conferences.

  4. Coordinate and facilitate groups of partners to work collaboratively on on-the-ground implementation of Initiatives.

  5. Work with NFWF departments to support their needs and ensure strong integration of existing and new programs in areas of overlap with Keystone and initiatives.

  6. Actively pursue innovative new private and public partnerships and funding for existing and new initiatives within Keystones and as part of new strategy.

Grants Management and Administration

  1. Manage applicable funding source(s) as appropriate, including preparation of grant applications and amendments, preparation and submission of financial and programmatic reports, and coordination with project officers to ensure compliance with all funding source requirements.

  2. Improve grant management process for tasks that are dependent on Keystone Directors' actions.

  3. Process all required in-house administrative expense and travel reports in a timely manner.

  4. Conduct site visits in accordance with Foundation policy.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recommending and leading efforts to improve internal administrative processes.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Chief Science Officer.

The Healing Our Waters – Great Lakes Coalition consists of more than 120 environmental, conservation, and outdoor recreation organizations, zoos, aquaria and museums. Our member organizations represent millions of people who share a common goal of restoring and protecting North America’s greatest freshwater resource, the Great Lakes. The Coalition is jointly operated by the National Wildlife Federation and the National Parks Conservation Association and is directed by a Governance Board made up of national and regional organizations.

The Healing Our Waters Coalition Campaign Director is responsible for directing a multi-million dollar, multi-organization campaign to obtain policies and funding to restore the Great Lakes. The director’s responsibilities include designing campaign strategy; building and maintaining a broad coalition; managing and following the directives of a multi-organization Governance Board; coordinating media, grassroots, and policy activities by dozens of organizations; fostering relationships with key funders; and managing campaign staff. This campaign is expected to last 5 years or more and is operated in partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association.

Postdoctoral Fellowship

USDA Forest Service Research and Development and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education seek an energetic postdoctoral researcher to estimate streamflow distributions on National Forest lands in the United States and apply the information to studies on stream temperature, aquatic ecology, and snowmelt.  Duties will involve both large scale modeling and field work in a local basin.

Applicants must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hydrology or a closely related field within five years of the desired starting date. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated publication record and a proven ability to perform activities independently. Experience with programming is preferred.

The appointment is full-time for one year and may be extended for up to three additional years upon the recommendation of the Forest Service and availability of funding. The annual stipend range for this position is from $47,448 up to $57,408, depending on qualifications.

The Food Systems Coordinator is a full-time position with the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA).  The Food Systems Coordinator is based in CFSA’s Pittsboro, NC office and is responsible for managing program initiatives to build food system infrastructure and improve market access for local, organic, and sustainable foods across the Carolinas.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Food Systems Coordinator works in concert with Food Systems team members and other CFSA staff to build the food system infrastructure necessary to support and enhance access to local, organic, and sustainable food across the Carolinas.  Specific responsibilities include supporting regional food system assessments, identifying and launching priority agriculture and food system projects, and developing a support network for growers, buyers, agripreneurs in the Carolinas.

The Food Systems Coordinator reports to the Operations Director and supervises staff as needed.  Potential for advancement within one year, dependent upon performance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINSTRATION & OUTREACH (5%):

·       Assist financial and programmatic monitoring to ensure compliance, progress towards objectives and expected results, and work plan and budget adherence.

·       Increase awareness and visibility of Food Systems programs, including presentations, speaking engagements, and general outreach.

·       Identify and pursue opportunities to expand membership and ensure member satisfaction.

FOOD SYSTEM ASSESSMENT (35%):

·       Lead CFSA participation in food assessments, including 1) documenting current food system conditions and identifying opportunities and barriers, 2) cataloging available/recommended primary and secondary data sources, 3) providing guidance on analysis and data driven decision-making.

·       Collaborate on statewide food system assessments and economic analyses to integrate CFSA food system goals with long-term strategic plans across the Carolinas.

·       Work with key partners to develop and maintain landscape analysis of Carolinas’ local, organic food systems including findings from existing assessments and data sources (internal and external), collaborating partners, key food initiatives/resources.

·       Convene and collaborate with regional advisory committee/s to guide regional needs assessments and develop recommendations by region.

FOOD PROJECTS & INFRASTRUCTURE INCUBATION (35%)

·       Collaborate on state, regional, and/or community action plans and investment strategies to identify priority food projects and possible sources of funding.  Projects to include 1) agricultural inputs and production, 2) processing, 3) aggregation and distribution, and 4) market channels.

·       Identify and cultivate relationships with agribusiness professionals, funders, and small business advisors to synergize efforts and leverage resources available.

·       Collaborate with partners to develop a support network for agripreneurs including: links to technical expertise, best practice/success models, connections to buyers/growers, and funding opportunities.

·       Assist and/or manage the piloting/incubation of priority food projects; approximately 2-3 large, regional projects per year.

·       Document best practices/case studies of successful business models.

DIRECT ASSISTANCE (25%)

·       Provide resources and guidance to local communities (i.e. food policy councils, extension, community development agencies) to conduct food assessments and identify priority food projects.

·       Collaborate with external partners (I.e. universities, Cooperative Extension, Dept. of Ag, etc.) to develop and/or disseminate resources on market improvement (access, scale-up/expansion, buyer requirements, market outlets, etc.).

·       Build resources on market outlets and market strategies and channel inquiries and requests for marketing assistance to appropriate advisors/service providers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

·       Bachelor's degree plus 3 years' experience or Master's degree plus 1 year experience, or equivalent professional experience in any of the following (or related) fields: whole systems design, community development/capacity-building, public planning, sustainable agriculture, supply chain management, nonprofit management.

·       5+ years experience in project management, specifically project planning/design, implementation, and assessment.

·       3+ years experience working on the nexus of food, agriculture, and sustainable development.

·       Knowledgeable of food systems; knowledge of the Carolinas’ food systems preferred

·       Strong analytic skills, including ability to identify systemic problems and develop innovative solutions.

·       Excellent interpersonal skills

·       Proven ability to multitask, consistently meet or exceed deadlines and goals, and work effectively with diverse groups and individuals

·       Must be self-directed, organized, attentive to details and enthusiastic
